Around the world right now there are more people living in darkness than when the lightbulb was invented. For those lucky enough in the developing world to have kerosene lamps, a million will die due to those same lamps. Sadly, 62% of those deaths will be children under 14 years old according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
We believe this must change.
With our partners at Cricket 4 Life (C4L), we are providing sustainable and renewable lighting to millions of households throughout the world.
Sustainable lighting also offers unimaginable advantages to these same families by providing them the opportunity to engage in night based business. This increased business raises an average family’s overall income by 30 per cent.
Giving millions of people access to light wherever they live around the world.
Saving money for those most in need to buy what we in the developed world take for granted.
Allowing children the chance to study at night giving them the potential to improve their lives.
Letting trade flourish even at all hours so that families across the globe grow their incomes.

The Global Citizen Compact
The last two decades have been the most successful in history in the fight against poverty: the share of people living in extreme poverty has been cut in half worldwide, from 43% in 1990 to under 20% today.
However, it is unacceptable that more than one billion people still live in extreme poverty. Ending extreme poverty in our lifetimes is a difficult but achievable goal. Now is the time to take action!
Why Get Rid Of Kerosene Lamps?
Kerosene has four deeply negative effects on the lives of those living in poverty and in many cases makes the lives of those it is meant to help worse.
Fumes – Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
“Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home.” United States Environmental Protection Agency
The World Bank estimates that 780 million women and children across the world will breathe in kerosene fumes which is equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes every single day.
Wealth
“Widespread energy poverty still condemns billions to darkness, ill health and missed opportunities for education and prosperity.” Ban Ki Moon – UN Secretary General
Among the poorest populations across the world, the cost of refueling a kerosene lamp uses up to 38% of their weekly income.
Fire
“Fuel-based lighting is a significant cause of structural fires and severe burn injuries, with particularly high death rates (24% on average) in cases where kerosene is adulterated with other fuels, resulting in explosions… Lamp and candle incidents cause structural fires, which can spread in tightly crowded slums, with a single event burning hundreds to thousands of homes.” US Department of Energy’s Lumina Project
In India alone 1.5 million people suffer severe burns each year, primarily due to overturned kerosene lamps. They also cause fires that spread rapidly across slums and refugee camps.
Environment
“We’re running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere… can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe.” Elon Musk – Founder of PayPal & Tesla Motors
Collectively, kerosene lamps cause 3% of the world’s CO2 emissions and are a significant source of black carbon, with more intense local warming impact.
